Huawei"s looking into display holes too, new patent reveals

There’s no denying 2018 has been the year of display notches but, moving into 2019, it appears the next trend may be display cut-outs. And just days after Samsung announced its new Infinity-O panel, Huawei has been granted a patent which is related to a similar concept.

For those unaware, Samsung’s new display makes use of a circular cut-out in the top-left corner that will be used for the front-facing camera. However, when it comes to Huawei’s concept, this circular hole is swapped out for one that is shaped just like an in-ear speaker. Presumably, this would then be used to house the earpiece and any other sensors that may be necessary up front. One thing that does remain unclear, though, is the placement of the selfie camera. After all, the cut-out depicted doesn’t appear big enough for the sensor.

As Huawei hasn’t yet confirmed plans to implement this kind of design, there’s no guarantee that it will do so. But with Samsung’s Galaxy S10 expected to adopt the new Infinity-O display, there’s a very high chance Huawei will adopt a similar design with its upcoming P30 series which is expected to be announced in March.

Considering the Mate 20 devices all use triple-camera setups, it’s highly likely that Huawei’s P30 series will follow suit. The flagships will also be powered by the Kirin 980 and should arrive with 128GB of internal storage. Aside from this, though, not much is know about the smartphones.
